A lady found a member of her family, John Bascom of Winfield, Kansas was killed at Glenns Ferry, Elmore County, Idaho by Indians in 1878. She would like to know if James Bascom of Rock Creek, Idaho was John's brother. In the last couple of years I have been trying to get things straightened out as to who was killed at Glenns Ferry, John or James Bascom. I think we have proved that it was John Bascom. Now I know we have some fine genealogist there in Glenns ferry as well as a museum with information about the 1878 Bannock Indian war so we should be able to solve this small problem as to whether John and James were brothers. James Bascom is shown in the 1870 census of Owyhee County as having been born in New York State, and was a miner. James Bascom is also shown in the 1880 census of Cassia county, Idaho as a merchant, born in New York State. I personaly saw his grave stone in Albion, Cassia County Idaho and it says he was born August 8, 1833 and died February 16, 1886. His wife's name on the grave stone was May. I have no record of any children born to this union. If anyone finds any proof that the two men, James and John Bascom were brothers, please let me know. Justine Gengras says she has found John's sister listed in Winfield Kansas, and later in Omaha, Nebraska. I will try and be in Glenns Ferry in a month or so. James L. Holloway, oldblue00@msn.com
