Priest River Times, Thursday, May 25, 1922

Mrs. Ellen Baker:
Miss Ellen McDonald was born at Buckingham, Canada, in August, 1838, died at Forest Lodge, the home of Mr. And Mrs. Sam Byers, at the head of Priest Lake, Tuesday, May 23, 1922, from a hemorrhage caused from over exertion.

Miss McDonald was married to Barney Carr in Minnesota from whom she afterward separated. Later she married G W Baker, who died several years ago.

Mrs. Baker was one of the Priest River pioneers, having located here in 1893, running the Northern Hotel, which was one of the first hotels, and is now known as the Savory. In 1909 she sold the hotel and moved to a homestead in the Hoodoo Valley where she stayed three years then went to Spokane where she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. L. D. Williamson.

She had been spending the winter in Priest River with her granddaughter, Mrs. Ted Hill, and family, and on Monday went to the upper end of Priest Lake to look after some mining interests that she had there. The long hard trip was too much for her as over exertion on the trip brought on the hemorrhage which caused her death.

She leaves six daughters and two sons besides other relatives to mourn her loss. The funeral will be held in Spokane at 2 o’clock, Friday afternoon after which interment will take place in a Spokane cemetery. Mrs. Baker had been a member of the Catholic church for many years. The Times extends sympathy to the bereaved ones for the loss of their loved one.
