He had a daughter, Anna, with Guđrún Sigurđardóttir in 1771, then married Gurrún Björnsdóttir and they had three children, Sigríđur, Ţóra and Guđrún. His second wife was Margrét Finnsdóttir, and they had two children, Guđrún and Jón.
Nothing is known about his ancestry - Jón Jónsson was the single most common name in Iceland at this time, and it is sometimes very hard to tell them apart - maybe that is why he adopted the name Grönstćd, but he is the only person who ever used that name.
