I did check the church records - turns out he was born on Dec 17th 1864 (not '65) and baptized on the 21st. Not an exact match, but close enough - in particular as he can be found in the 1870 and 1880 census, but not in the 1890 census, so there is a fair chance that this is indeed the person who emigrated.
