Well, if he had been born in Iceland and his father had been named Halldór, he would have been Magnús Halldórsson, so there is some error somewhere.

There is one possible candidate of the right age - his father was Brynjólfur Halldórsson, (so his granddather was Halldór), but his mother was Jórunn, not Jóhanna. He did also have a brother, Þórður (Thordur) Brynjólfsson born 1862.

I'll take a look at the church records to see if the birth date matches.
