Jerome,
Halfdan is correct the Scheving name originated in Denmark in the town of Skaevinge (a village that still exists today north of Copenhagen). The Scheving name was taken by the children of Laritz Jorgensen, who was a Minister in Shaevinge, 1590b-1668d. It its believed that they took the latin form of the town and used "Schevingius" or "Scheving". I believe that Christen Lauritzen Schevinguis stayed in Denmark as a Minister, but his descentants did not use Schevinguis as a last name. Hans Lauritson Scheving (1630b-Mar 11, 1701d) moved to Bergin, Norway and became a Judge. His only son, Lauritz Hansson Scheving (1664b. - Aug 5, 1722d.) moved to Iceland in the 1680's (Mooruvellir, Eyja.) and he became a Judge there. I believe that there were descendants of Lauritz Hansson Scheving that moved back to Denmark. I believe that all Schevings are descendants of Lauritz Hanson Scheving. I doubt if this helps with your search for roots in France, but it is the best information I have.
Tony Scheving
