Hi,
O.K., I´ve done some checking and found out that Jon was the son of Magnus Gunnarsson of Saevarland and Maria Olafsdottir, who was probably a servant there at the time of his birth, but I haven´t found any information on her yet. He was born a few months after his half-brother Magnus, son of Magnus Gunnarssons wife. I haven´t yet found any information on where he was brought up. Magnus was considered a good farmer and was comparatively well off, even though he had 10 legitimate children to support. They were: Ingunn, b. 1857, Gudvardur, b. 1859, Gunnar, b. 1861, Sigurdur, b. 1863, Gudrun, b. 1864, Halldfridur Minerva, b. 1866, Magnus, b. 1867, Sigridur, b. 1868, Sveinn, b. 1869, and Ingibjorg, b. 1871. Sigurdur, Hallfridur, Sveinn and Ingibjorg all emigrated to America.

He married four times and was said to have abducted his first wife (Magnús´ mother) from her home near Reykjavík and taken her to his home in the north. They married in 1817. She was named Gudrun Ingjaldsdottir (b. around 1788, d. 1825), daughter of Ingjaldur Ottason (who was violently opposed to Gunnar and forbade the lovers to marry) and Thuridur Bjarnadottir. Gunnars´parents were Magnus Asgrimsson of Ytra-Tungukot, Skagafjordur, and Hallfridur Gunnarsdottir. I may be able to find more on them later, if you are interested.

Another source tells me that Jon was a labourer first in Duluth, then in Keewatin, Ontario, Selkirk, Manitoba, and then in Winnipeg, where he passed away on 2. March 1952. The same source says his daughter Hallgerdur Roslaug was born in Duluth on 12. Apr. 1893.
