Thorbjörg Ólafsdóttir 1832-? of Pembina
Resident in the Pembina community in Pembina County, North Dakota, in 1900 was the Thorbjörg Ólafsdóttir family. Thorbjörg, her daughter, Sigrí?ur Björnsdóttir, and grandson Thorsteinn Thorsteinsson, emigrated from the farm Bar? in Reykholt Parish, Borgarfjar?arsysla, in 1892, with stated destination Winnipeg. The following year, they were joined by her son, Thorbjörn Björnsson, a man in his early 30s who had apparently married a lady 26 years his senior, Sigrí?ur Thorsteinsdóttir. They likley did live in Canada the first years, moving to the US in 1899. Between 1895 and 1900 daughter Sigrí?ur has died, leaving 2 sons, Thorsteinn and Alfred, who live with their uncle and grandmother. Also with the family in Pembina was a 39 year old house servant, ‘Björg Halldorson’, otherwise completely unidentified. She had emigrated from Iceland in 1886. Her actual first name could be any of those commonly shortened to Björg, so her identity is a mystery; her actual last name is likely Halldórsdóttir, although Halldórsson may be the last name of her father. It is believed that Thorbjörg is the daughter of Ólafur Jónsson and Gu?rún Gu?mundsdóttir. Her husband was Björn Eggertsson, believed to be the son of Eggert Gíslason of Reykholt. It is likely that Björn was still alive when Thorbjörg left Iceland but that he died prior to 1900. Sigrí?ur, Thorbjörn’s wife, may be the daughter of Thorsteinn Thi?riksson, but this is mere speculation. Anyone information regarding these people would be appreciated.
