Thank you for the interesting info re this name. I am a descendant of Jane Ibbitson b. 1795 who married George Lund in Sackville NB in 1821. Jane and George both came to Canada about 1817-1820 from Yorkshire. At least 4 of Jane's brothers came to Nova Scotia then, possibly other siblings and her parents William I. and Frances Thompson: they were from the Helmsley/Kilburn/ Nunnington area of North Yorkshire. I believe that the names Lund and Ibbitson are of Scandinavian, perhaps Viking, origin - I was more convinced when I spotted the name "Ibitsdottir" in old Yorkshire records. Several of us were wondering if the name was linked to the common name Ibsen - thanks for clarifying how this might be (there seems to be no Ibbitson/Ibbotsons in Scandinavia now).
For more data re the Ibbitsons in Nova Scotia and Ontario, see my home page at:http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/l/u/n/Martin-B-Lund/
I am indebted to Myra Anderson for much of the data - she has posted several messages here. I'd be delighted to hear from anyone who is connected to the Ibbitson family.
