In family records, I discovered this brief autobiograpical note: "Mary Ellender Evans was born April 18, 1849, . . . married to James G. Evans March 16, 1873, . . . born in Wayne County, Kentucky April 8, 1849. My father John Vaughn was born in Kentucky. My mother Martha J. Vaughn was born in North Carolina. My husband James G. Evans was born March 23, 1847 [in] Iowa or Tennessee. James G. died November 8, 1880 in Wayne County, Iowa. I come [sic] to Wayne County, Iowa, as the war closed in 1865."

Other sources record that the Vaughn family left Cole County, Missouri, at the end of the Civil War and settled just over the Iowa border in Wayne County, Iowa. Already established in Wayne County, Stephen Vaughn was John's brother and Stephen's wife Mary Jane Nicholas Vaughn was niece to John's wife. All these Vaughns and many of their descendants were buried in the Evergreen Cemetery on the north side of Lineville.
