No records of your family in Taylor county courthouse. Other Martindale’s present in 1870-80 time period were David, John Wesley, and Joseph L.

I checked census for a SC born Martindale in Indiana and found the following

1860 census Richland, Miami, Indiana
Martindale, Moses 83, farmer SC
Margret, 73, NC
(further down on same page, farm laborer in household of Samuel and Mary Griffith)
Martendell, John 19, IN

1850 census Richland, Miami, Indiana
Martindale, Moses 73 SC
Margaret 63 NC
Sarah 19
Eliza 3
Moses A 8mo
William 27
Sarah W 23
(next door)
Martindale, David 27 (A David Martindale was in Taylor county by 1872)
Elizabeth 27
John C 6
Nancy 4
Thos 11 mo
Jane G 18
Amanda G 16
Isaac G 13

On another page in Richland 1850
Martindale Charles 35
Eleanor 24
Elizabeth 11 (She is too old to be a daughter of Eleanor)
Martha 6
Mary 4
Amanda 1
Next door
William 38 b. Ohio or Carolina (just a single loop letter that could be O or C. However, south and north carolina were clear for Moses and his wife. My guess is Sarah may have been married before, or some of the younger ones are siblings of William)
Sarah 44
John 16
Hannah 14
Charles 12
John 10
Martha 8
Sarah 4
William 1

1840 census Richland, Miami, Indiana
Jesse, Moses, William

Moses appears to be too old to be John's father. However he may be the source of giving SC as where his father was born. Moses is likely John's grandfather.
