Some Tilden Family History

The Tilden ancestry traces to one Nathaniel Tilden who was baptized in Tenderden Kent, England in 1583. He was mayor of the borough of Scituate, Massachusetts in 1622 and died there in 1641. Julius Clark Tilden is in the seventh generation.

The Tildens lived in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Vermont. A Massachusetts farm has been in the Tilden family for more than two hundred years. (See “Deep Are Their Roots” in “Country Gentleman” September, 1946.) Undoubtedly, present day descendants may be found throughout the United States and in foreign countries.

The name Tilden has long been associated with Ames, Iowa. George C. Tilden, eldest son of Julius, came to Ames, then a village, in 1869 from Vermont to establish a merchandising business that is still in operation. He was a shrewd businessman and left his imprint on the city. Julius C. Tilden and his second son Frederick came to Ames in 1870, driving a four horse team hitched to a wagon load of their goods from the nearest railroad in the eastern part of Story County. The Tilden brothers and their descendants were active in business, professional and civic affairs. Serving as mayors, as did their progenitor, and by making their contributions to the business, civic, and church life they were influential in the continued development of the City of Ames.
