I find in the index to Avoca, Iowa, marriages between 1908-1921 a marriage of Frank Desmond to Helen Kelly. I wonder if this is Daniel F. Desmond.......was his middle name Frank?

Also, in the 1930 census for Pottawattamie Co, IA, Council Bluffs, the following:

Leslie, Joseph B., 52, b. IA, father b. U.S., mother b. U.S., yard foreman, steam railroad
Leslie, Genevieve, wife, 45, b. IA, father b. PA, mother b. UT
Leslie, Margaret, 21, b. IA, cosmetician, beauty shop
DESMOND, Joseph, nephew, 32, b. IA, father b. IA, mother b. IA, fireman, steam railroad

This looks like it could be Joseph Desmond, son of Patrick, even though the place of birth for his father is wrong.

In the 1930 census for Cass co., IA, near Atlantic is Daniel P. Desmond, age 39, b. IA, and wife Margaret, 32; daughter Margaret, 11, and son John, 8, along with John McGuire, age 14, identified as a "ward" of Daniel Desmond.

The following persons are buried in the Atlantic Catholic Cemetery, Cass Co., all named DESMOND:
Daniel P; Dolly; Ellen; Hannora; Helen; John; Johnnie; Katie; Maggie; Mary; Mike.

It looks like your family continued to live in Iowa, particularly the Atlantic, IA, Cass Co. region. In the October 3, 1949 newspaper for Council Bluffs (The Nonpareil), there is a society article as follows:

Edwin Desmond of Atlantic came Friday to spend several days here with his brother and sister in law, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Desmond. Another brother and sister in law, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Desmond of Des Moines, who were in Sioux City for a convention, spent Sunday with the other three at Joseph Demond's. (end)

In another article dated August 31, 1954, it states that Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Desmond and daughter, Elizabeth, have returned from St. Joseph and Kansas City, MO. In St. Joseph they visited Mr. Desmond's aunt, Miss Nora Desmond, and cousins. They also visited Mrs. Desmond's aunt Mrs James P. Smith and family at Kansas City.

It also looks like Bernard Desmond lived in Council Bluffs as well. so it's pretty apparent the family stayed in Pottawattamie County. If I can help you further, please let me know. I also have city directories for Council Bluffs.

It looks like Mrs. Joseph P. Desmond was perhaps a music teacher at St. Francis Academy in Council Bluffs.

In another article dated April 28, 1954, Mrs. Joseph P. Desmond, 618 S. 9th st., returned Monday evening from Avoca and Harlan. While in Avoca she attended the funeral services for Mrs. George Leslie.

The Council Bluffs Nonpareil is full of articles about this family.
