Durn, the Scheffers weren't there or were missed. Rene was dead in 1917.
At any rate, I did finally find someone who knew that Rene's parents were Gustave and Louis Plante Scheffer, both born in Canada. And I do know the marriage and death dates.

Despite the later censuses, Rene was born in Minnesota, not in Canada, and in 1879, not in time for the civil war.

With that clue and the answer from the NARA that the index of civil war soldiers/veterans that are on Ancestry.com includes soldiers to 1912, I was able to find Rene in the Spanish American War and his widow lived until 1947 so her pension records will be at the Dept. of Veterans Affairs. I'll need a Freedom of Information request. And now I know how to get the other 2 missing civil war records with widows who lived until the 1940's.
Boy, oh boy.
Thank goodness for good people like you to guide me.
