Vonnie and John make me nervous because they have popped up suddenly as supposed siblings to JRH (to be precise, half or step siblings - I'll say siblings for ease). Their names would be key at the start - and are unsettling to hear at the end of a rather lengthy search for JRH antecedents.
What is the source of their names? Is it the obit? I'm still not clear on that You did post the link to the obit Erin, so you tried to share it! I looked on Ancestry but didn't find it. Could you type the few sentences that have to do with JRH parents and sibs.
One of my first posts said: "JRH’s obit refers to his step-siblings - plural. Does it give their names? Locations? Do you have other knowledge of who his siblings and step-siblings were? Their names can help us locate JRH in a census, etc., if you haven't done that already. Their birth and death and marriage certificates may list their father's name."
You write: "1914: Maggie Butler marries J. Leonard Armstrong in Iowa. Half or step siblings: John Armstrong, Vonnie Armstrong, Pearl Armstrong." But unfortunately you forgot to clarify the source of the Vonnie and John names. Somewhere in the thread it could have been discussed - it's an awfully long thread.
I went back and did find the relevant census, which shows siblings Glen, James, and Ida along with Pearl. John and Vonnie could have to be born in this family after 1930:
1930
Nishnabotny, Crawford, Iowa
J L Armstrong 37 b abtou 1893 Nebraska
Madgie Armstrong 36 b about 1894 Iowa
Glen Armstrong 14 b about 1916 Iowa
James Armstrong 9 b about 1921 Iowa
Pearl Armstrong 5 b about 1925 Iowa
Ida Armstrong 2 b about 1928 Iowa
So that is key proof we should try to establish that would tie JRH in the obit to this Armstrong family (if the obit is where the Vonnie and John names comes from).
Another kind of sibling is sibling-in-law.
