You might find death or probate records in one of these counties

In 1900 John Volk, b. Nov 1824, is living in Sioux Township, Clay County, Iowa with his daughter Annie Kaybrick, her husband Edgar and his parents. Annie's birthdate is given as Dec 1877, and is says she has one living child, but the child is not listed.

There is a Joseph Volk of about the right age in Plymouth County on the 1918 WWI draft registration, and 1930 census, unmarried in both.
