William Gardner Betterton - First White Settler

I am looking for information regarding the claim that William Gardner Betterton (7/3/1801-3/13/1860) was the first white settler in Iowa Territory 6 years before it was purchased from the Indians. He relocated to Wapello County in June 1838. Does anyone have a clue as to where I can find verification??
