Thank you so much for your efforts. I'll post what I find out in Cresco next week. Maybe I have had the wrong birthdate... in the early 1990s I had written to Iowa requesting a birth record for Edward Alfred Merritt - but one was not found. I'm hoping that I'll have better luck in Cresco. Is there any way to get a copy of the 1885 census image via email? That was one of the things I wanted to look at in Cresco.

I know that I may have trouble tracking down his father or possibly may never know anything about him... but at least I have a name and even a possible birthplace! This is why I love genealogy!
