“Mrs. Aug. F. Behr Stricken Suddenly Last Wednesday - Passed Away Suddenly Wednesday of Last Week-Previous Attack of Flu Presumed Cause
Death came suddenly to a beloved wife and mother of the Fulda community, the unexpected and double sorrowful passing of Mrs. August Behr at the Clinic hospital at Worthington last Wednesday being a severe shock to her friends and relatives. Within the week she had been up and about her duties, attending the meeting of the Lutheran Aid Society and passing the hours quietly with her usual tasks.
In February of this year, Mrs. Behr suffered an unusually sever attack of flu, from which she never fully recovered. On the Saturday previous to her demise she experienced the severe pains in the head which characterized her illness in February and by Tuesday the pain had so affected her mind that she was rushed to the Clinic at Worthington where examination proved she was suffering from an infection in her head, which led to meningitis. On Wednesday morning her condition appeared about the same, but she rapidly grew worse and about noon passed suddenly away. Her daughters, Mrs. M.C. Goins, and Mrs. Frederick Bender, remained at her bedside constantly and were present when death mercifully put an end to her suffering.
Wilhelmina Caroline Everhart was born November 21, 1868, at Clinton, Iowa. In January, 1891, she was united in marriage to Fred Wessel and to this union were born three children. On May 19, 1898, she was united in marriage to August Behr at Clinton, and assumed the care of his five children by a former marriage. To their union were born five children, 2 sons and 3 daughters, and the whole of the thirteen children survive the passing of Mrs. Behr and were present at the last services.
For three years after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Behr lived in the vicinity of Clinton and then removed to a farm three miles east of Fulda, removing the next year to a farm next directly west of that. In 1912, the Behrs purchased their own farm seven miles southwest of Fulda, where they resided for ten years before retiring in 1922 to the home they purchased in Fulda, and where they have since resided.
Mrs. Behr leaves to mourn her death, besides her loving husband, her daughters, Mary (Mrs. George Jacobs) of Madison, S.D., Edna (Mrs. M.C. Goins) of this community, and Millie (Mrs. John Bucher), also of this community; Dorothy (Mrs. Frederick Bender) of Henderson, Minn., and her sons, Henry Wessel of Madison, S.D., George Behr of Brewster, Harry Behr of Westbrook, Edwin Behr of Fulda; also Mrs. Archie McHarg of Fulda, and the sons Chris Behr of Minneapolis, and Sanke, Fred M., and Andrew Behr of Fulda. Also surviving are two sisters, a brother, 37 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mrs. Behr was endowed with an enviable disposition, calm and unruffled in the face of everything, a devout church member and active in all affairs connected with the church, being ever ready to do more than her share when called upon. Leisure time of the later years of her life has been taken up for a large part in needlework, and many fine specimens of her artistry with her needle have gone as gifts to relatives and friends. The large attendance at the funeral services but feebly attested to the esteem in which this beloved mother, wife, and neighbor was held by people of the Fulda community.
Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon from St. Paul’s Lutheran church in Fulda, with Rev. O.A. Soeldner conducting the last sad rites. Pall bearers were John Breit, Garrett Nantkes, Geo. Lober, and Leonard Gunderman. Interment was made in Prairie Hill cemetery, and the remains were followed to their last resting place by a huge cortege of sorrowing friends and relatives.
Among the relatives who came to attend the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wessel, Mr. and Mrs. John Weber and Mrs. George Jacobs of Madison, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Huepner of Leeds Grove, Iowa; Mrs. John Eggers of Andover, Iowa; Mrs. Henry Hefert of Sabula, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John Gedionsen and Mr. and Mrs. August Jannsen of Clinton, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Chris Behr and Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Guthier of Minneapolis, all of whom arrived Friday. Mr. and Mrs. John Lange of Storm Lake, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Truman Hackett, John Jacobs and George Jacobs, of Madison, S.D., Mrs. Martha Brandt and son, Lloyd, of Elkton, S.D., who came Saturday for the funeral services. Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Bender of Henderson who had driven down to spend Mother’s Day here were also present.” (This article came from a relative’s scrapbook. The name and date of the paper are unknown. However, there is a handwritten date of May 16, 1934)
