* DEATH NOTICE: Mary McClelland Brown "Leader" or "Herald-Patriot" Newspaper - Chariton, IA - Oct 1921 Relatives and friends of the family were greatly shocked to learn of the death of Mrs. W. S. Tharp, of Whitebreast township, which occurred on Tuesday night at the hospital in Osceola, where she underwent an operation for adhesions of the bowels. She was apparently getting along nicely until a few hours before her death, when a turn for the worse suddenly came. The remains were brought to her home yesterday morning and this forenoon at 10:30 o'clock funeral services, conducted by Rev. E. W. Curtis, were held at the family home, after which interment took place in the Chariton cemetery. She is survived by her husband and one daughter; Mrs. Daisy Wright, and one grandson. Mrs. Tharp was formerly Miss Mary McClelland Brown, a daughter of the late Wm. Brown and wife. * OBITUARY: Mary McClelland Brown "Leader" or "Herald-Patriot" Newspaper - Chariton, IA - Oct 1921 Mary McClelland Brown was born near Bloomington, Indiana September 22, 1864 and died October 4, 1921, at the hospital in Osceola, Iowa. Her parents, William C. and Esther Brown removed to Lucas County, Iowa from Indiana when Mary was an infant, and she resided in this county since that date. On November 17, 1887 [ED Note: Date of marriage was November 17, 1886] she was married to William S. Tharp and to this union one child, a daughter Daisy Tharp Wright, was born. Mary was the second child of eight children; three sisters and one brother preceded her in death, two sisters, Mrs. Effie Veirs, and Mrs. Ella Miller, and brother, Ira Brown survive. The immediate relatives who are left to mourn her death are her husband, daughter, and grandson, Clifford Tharp. In her early life she was united with the Advent Church, but later became a member of the Methodist Church in Derby. She was also a member of the Baptist Aid Society, and took a great interest in any and all work for the benefit of humanity. The later years of her life were devoted to the care of her aged and infirm mother who made her home with Mrs. Tharp until her death about a year ago, and the loving, kindly disposition of this splendid woman is best shown by her devotion and affection for her immediate family and invalid mother. Mrs. Tharp coming from one of those sturdy pioneer families of Lucas County and growing to womanhood in this community had sincere friends in large number who knew her real worth to the community, and who will mourn her death. ---------------------------------------- Transcribed from the originals by: Gary W.
