I was wondering if anyone might know the whereabouts of a portrait sold at an estate sale, held in Wapello in late 1968 or early 1969. The portrait was a black and white sketch of James M. BAILEY, my gg-grandfather. I have the matching portrait of his wife, Alice (STORKS) BAILEY.
My grandmother called her grandfather James "the scoundrel who ran off", leaving his family in Wapello. An obituary for one of his siblings later placed him in California, and I don't know what became of him after that. Being bitter, my grandmother let her grandfather's portrait be sold at auction, "for whatever the frame was worth", while keeping her grandmother's portrait. It was sold at the estate sale of Lewis Cass and Eva Taylor (BAILEY) MINCHER in Wapello, my grandmother's parents.
The matching portrait is in a frame that measures 23 1/2 inches wide and 28 inches high. The outer trim of the frame has a leaf and flower motif. The center ring of the frame is oak grained. The inner ring of the frame has a scroll pattern and was gold-leafed. These probably date to between 1890 and 1900.
If at all possible, I would like a photo of the portrait, to see what my gg-grandfather looked like. I was too young to remember now anything now about how he looked. Thank you.
