In many mid-western states, counties are divided up into townships. Actually once your know the township your ancestors were in it is simpler. For a map that shows townships for Johnson Co., Iowa, go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~iajohnso/johnmap.htm
It will show all the townships for Johnson county.
