I have been checking the records for your Ralph, and see that he was in the Civil War, applied for a pension, received it evidently and his widow Lucinda filed after his death. If you ordered these records you will get a lot of information about both of them. The records are a little expensive now days, but I have found they are well worth the cost, in finding out about our ancestors.

Ralph Shatto Company C, 19th Regement Iowa Infantry,filed June 14 1880 Invalid # 292-023, Certificate # 899-622
Sep 5 1894/9? Widow # 704-764, Cert. # 494-880 Iowa

List of Civil War Soldier, Sailors and Marines in Iowa 1885

Ralph Shatto Pvt CO. C. Toledo (Iowa)To,
Ralph Shatto 1st Sgt C. Cedar Rapids (Iowa)

If you find he was born of April 20 1838, his lineage is well documented as the s/o of Joseph 4 Shatto and Mary Ann Walker Shatto /Chateau I have some information on Ralph's children from 1900 onward, if they would help.
