The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, March 1, 1906

Mount Pleasant, Iowa; Feb. 24. -- After forcing his way into the home of DR. O.B. ALLEN and killing MISS FLORENCE ALLEN and wounding MRS. ALLEN, ELDRIDGE BECKER, a rejected suitor of the young lady, rushed to his room and fired a rifle bullet into his brain, dying almost instantly. It is thought that he was crazed by his unrequited love. He was about 20 years old and his victim but 19.

About 10:30 o'clock last night, MRS. ALLEN and MISS FLORENCE, who were in the sitting room of their home were frightened by the noise of someone endeavoring to force entrance through a side door. They started for the front door to make their getaway and summon aid. Just as they reached the exit MISS ALLEN was shot dead, falling across the threshold, and a second bullet grazed MRS. ALLEN's body. The assailant fled through the rear door and MRS. ALLEN, as soon as she recovered from her fear, hurriedly summoned neighbors. She had secured but a glimpse of the murderer and could give only a meager description. The officers in addition to a score of citizens immediately began search for the criminal. Suspicion was at once directed against BECKER. It was generally known that he had been "turned down" by MISS ALLEN and it was rumored that he had made threats. The officers soon went to the vacant house in the outskirts where he roomed and forcing entrance found him dead. He did not leave any note or explanation so far as known.

The ALLEN and BECKER families are among the best known citizens. DR. ALLEN has resided here for years and MR. JACOB BECKER is a prominent farmer living three miles east of the city.

MISS ALLEN was about 19 years old and a graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College. Recently she has been an instructor in Howe's Academy here. Young BECKER has been attending the academy for some time, staying in town during the winter months.

MISS ALLEN and BECKER went together for a considerable length of time but some months ago she severed their relations. BECKER took his rejection bitterly and evidenced his sorrow.
