Debbie, Thank you SO much for taking time to look up my Richard family information! You went WAY beyond just "nice" by finding them in census records for me...thank you AGAIN!
Although I have already located them in the census records, I didn't have the information on Mary E. Richard's marriage to John S. Green! All I knew was that she married John Green (didn't have his middle initial) first and then married "Elisha Saunders" second.
I think I found John S. Green in the 1850 census in Mount Pleasant just prior to their marriage. I haven't been able to locate any information on Mary's second husband, however. Neither one of them survived past 1888 and I don't think Mary had children by either man...
"Nancy" is enumerated with Elijah Richard(s) in census records from 1850 through 1880, all in New London, Henry County, Iowa. She is listed as his wife in all of them.
However, in a bio of Elijah Richard in the "Portrait and Biographical Album of Henry County, Iowa", 1888, Chicago, Acme Publishing Co., Page 228-231, absolutely no mention is made of her!!
Elijah was married first to Elizabeth H. Thompson on 23 April 1818 in Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia. The family migrated to Iowa 27 October 1841 and it was there, in New London, that Elizabeth died in April 1848.
Elijah married Nancy sometime between 1848 and 1850, probably in Iowa. He was a prominent business man there. I'm trying to learn her identity...obviously Elijah and Elizabeth's daughter, Catharine, did not like her stepmother because it was Catharine who submitted the information to the "Portrait and Biographical Album of Henry County, Iowa" and she didn't mention her stepmother...curious, eah!?
Elijah had six children, none of whom lived past the age of early adulthood except Catharine. Catharine never married and had no children. In 1901, upon Catharine's death in New London, her lawyer had to locate her cousins in order to settle her estate. It is through her estate settlement that we were able to identify her father's siblings and some of their descendants!
Once again, thank you for your help! If you happen to find anything about Elijah and his family, I'd sure appreciate your passing it on...particularly the identity of his second wife!
Let me know if I can help you here in St. George, Utah!
