Maynard, Iowa (zip code 50655):

THE INCORPORATED TOWN OF MAYNARD

. . .''The first entry of land made in Harlan Township was by Henry Maynard in 1851, but he did not come from Illinois to live on the land until 1861. Just south of the Maynard claim was that of George Rich, also entered in 1861. Rich moved his family here in 1861 from Belvidere, Illinois, where he lived neighbor to the Maynard's. Separating the two claims was a rail fence and two rows of willows. This also marked the section line. Maynard, [Iowa], is located on parts of four sections at the center of the township, portions of the town are now laid out in sections 14, 14, 22 and 23.

In the fall of 1855 C.M. Shanklin built a log house and in the spring of 1856 moved his family from Illinois. This house stood near the two oaks on the corner of the land just east of the present A.G. Schlegel residence, across the street from the old creamery. It is believed that this log cabin came to be the favorite station for the illegal Underground Railway that ran its stealthy trail through what was known then as Long Grove. It is said that many a runaway slave were smuggled in and out by means of a deluding load of hay or a secretive sleighing party.

Up to this time the settlement was called Long Grove, for the long stretch of virgin timber along this branch of the Volga River. But the town was not laid out until the construction of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Minnesota Railroad was assured in the early seventies. Maynard was laid out in 1872-73 by J.J. Berkey of West Union. The plat was recorded October 16, 1873, and incorporated in June 1887. There was another Long Grove in southeastern Iowa and so it was necessary to find a new name for the new town. Judge Green gave it the name of ''Maynard'' named after Henry Maynard who had donated the land as the site for the first depot. This was a boxcar set off the wheels.

Maynard, [Iowa], is located in a tranquil setting of a beautiful wooded area through which flows the gentle winding Volga River, which provides many recreational pleasures for young and old. Maynard is located in Fayette, County, 22 miles south of the county seat of West Union and 8 miles north of Oelwein on Highway 150. Maynard is the only town in Harlan Township and has a population of 503 (72 census).

HENRY TRAVIS MAYNARD was born in Winchester County [Westchester County?], New York, February 18, 1816. The first 29 years of his life were spent in Chenango County, New York. In 1838 he was united in marriage to Charity Rosa. They had four children, Schuyler, Hester Ann wife of S. T. Barnes, Edwin who died when he was 2 years old and Gustavus.

In 1845 he brought his family to Belvidere, Illinois. Two years later his wife died leaving three small children. On September 23, 1849 he married Amelia Greene. They had eight children, Ellen wife of Col. Brown, Fannie wife of Emery Frost, Adelia, wife of Dorr Godfrey, Henry, Emmer (F), John, William and Clarion. William died at age 10 years and Clarion at age 1 1/2 of diphtheria. The three youngest children were born in Maynard, [Iowa].

In 1851 the Maynards came to Fayette County, Iowa, and he was the first to enter a claim to land in Harlan township. Mr. Maynard served in various public offices, township and county.

When about 25 years of age, Mr. Maynard united with the Baptist Church in Chenango County, New York. He later transferred his membership to a Baptist church in Belvidere, Illinois and subsequently to the Presbyterian church in Maynard. Of the eight living children of Mr. Maynard all were with him during his last illness except Mrs. Adelia Godfrey, who lived in the state of Washington. Mr. Henry Maynard, Sr. died in Maynard March 8, 1903, at the age of 87 years and was buried in the Long Grove Cemetery in Maynard, [Iowa]. . . .''
