Dubuque Daily Times, Tuesday 6 Sep 1881 Yesterday afternoon about four o'clock Fr. Knoernschild, proprietot of the New Jefferson House, died from what is believed to be heart disease. He had been complaining for about two weeks, but yesterday morning was about the hotel in apparently good health. About noon he was taken suddenly ill, and at four o'clock was dead. Mr Knoernschild was 45 years of age, and leaves a wife and two children. These children were the results of his first union. In 1875 he was married to the wife who survives him, and who was widow of Fred Knoernschmid, who died in 1875, and who was a brother of the deceased. The wife also has two children- the results of her first marriage. No children came to bless Mr Knoernschild's second union. Deceased was a man highly respected and admired by all who knew him. He was a quiet, inoffensive and gentlemanly citizen, and leaves behind him a record that will honor his memory. Dubuque Daily Herald, Tuesday 6 Sep 1881. Mr Frederick Knoernschild, proprietor of the New Jefferson House No. 524 Clay street,was found dead in his bed yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. In the morning Mr Knoernschild appeared as active and healthy as usual and tranacted some business up town. At noon he was behind the bar, after dinner, as was his his custom, he went to his room and laid down for a nap, and as stated he was found dead at 3:30 o'clock. The deceased had been afficted with heart disease and his physician, Dr. Mengis, attributes his death to this cause. The coroner was summoned, but after making inquiries he deemed it unnecessary to hold an inquest. The deceased was married in this city a few years ago to his second wife, who with several children survive him. Dubuque Daily Herald, 8 Sep 1881.
