MARTHA BREWSTER was the wife of POWELL HOFF. and mother to his 12 children. Her parents were NATHAN BREWSTER (1758 New Windsor, Orange Co., NY - 1742 Athens Co., OH) and a HANNAH PARKER (1768 CT - 1855 New Plymouth, Vinton Co., OH). The maternal grandmother of MARTHA BREWSTER, and mother of HANNAH PARKER BREWSTER, was a a woman named HANNAH CHAPMAN, who married a RUEBEN PARKER. What follows is more definitive information on her origins, which will be of interest to our "Dutch" line of HOFFs who descend down from POWELL HOFF & MARTHA BREWSTER HOFF:
Mystery of HANNAH CHAPMAN's origins solved (perhaps)!
I received a response to a "look-up help wanted" posting from a kind, local Wallingford soul, who searched the Wallingford, CT records and told me this:
1. The parents of HANNAH CHAPMAN (married to RUEBEN PARKER on 10 Dec 1764 were:
a. MICHAEL (or Micael ?, as she spelled it) CHAPMAN; and,
b. MARCY DOOLITTLE.
They were married on 12 Mar 1733 in Wallingford, New Haven Co., CT (Vol. LR 5, Pg. 509, Wallingford Vital Records).
Their children were:
(1. ABIAH CHAPMAN - b: 19 Sep 1753;
(2. HANNAH CHAPMAN - b: 2 Mar 1745/46;
(3. **MARTHA CHAPMAN - 13 Oct 1733;
(4. MARY CHAPMAN - b: 27 Jun 1735;
(5. MERCY CHAPMAN - b: 28 May 1742;
(6. NATHANIEL CHAPMAN - b: 9 Nov 1739;
(7. RUTH CHAPMAN - b: 7 May 1744; and,
(8. SARAH - b: 23 Jul 1737
2. The parents of RUEBEN (RUBEN ?) PARKER, married 17 Oct 1727 in Wallingford, New Haven Co., CT., were:
a. JOHN PARKER (III); and,
b. DEBORAH MATTHUS
Their children were:
(1. ABIAH PARKER - b: 13 Jul 1728 - d: 14 Aug 1728;
(2. DEBORAH PARKER - b: 4 May 1734;
(3. ELISABETH PARKER - b: 11 Nov 1743;
(4. GIDION PARKER - b: 5 Jul 1740;
(5. ISIAH PARKER - b: 14 Jun 1746;
(6. JESSE PARKER - b: 16 Mar 1736;and,
(7. **RUEBEN (Ruben ?) PARKER - b: 12 Mar 1738.
The information was found at Vol. LR 5, Pg. 540.
It would appear that the LDS data reflecting the marriage of RUEBEN PARKER and HANNAH CHAPMAN in Waterbury, New Haven Co., CT on 10 Dec 1764 is likely correct, despite the fact that neither of the couple's parents appear to have come from there - and were from Wallingford. So, it is possible or probable that perhaps HANNAH CHAPMAN's parents might have moved there from Wallingford after the two children knew each other, and then RUEBEN had to go there to marry HANNAH on 10 Dec 1764. Alternatively, the children could have moved there individually or together, and married there despite the lack of presence of either of their parents. The researcher opined that it appeared to her "that REUBEN and HANNAH had left Wallingford before they were married and had children." She could find no marriage record for the couple in Wallingford, so this seems likely.
Their only known (to me) offspring of the couple was a daughter, HANNAH PARKER, born 4 years ofter the marriage someplace in "CT" on 30 Dec 1768 (likely either Waterbury or Wallingford). But the family moved on to Butternuts Twp., Otsego Co., NY by the late 1790s. Their residence or other children, if any, for the 33 year period between their 1764 marriage in Waterbury, and the 1797 marriage of their daughter in Butternuts Twp. is unknown to me.
Their only known (to me, at least) daughter, HANNAH PARKER, at age 29 on 31 Jul 1797 married a 39 year old neighboring batchelor and Rev. War Vet., NATHAN BREWSTER residing there on "Bounty Land" next door to the Parkers in Butternuts Twp., Otsego Co., NY. He was born in New Windsor, Orange Co., NY to TIMOTHY BREWSTER in 1758. I assume(or donclude) that REUBEN PARKER and wife HANNAH CHAPMAN PARKER both died there i Butternuts Twp. between 1800 and 1810, as the husband's (as 'head of household') name disappears off the 1810 census, and no HANNAH PARKER was noted on the Census, either. But the daughter and her husband and their growing family continued to reside there until after 1810, making it unlikely that her then elderly PARKER parents would have moved away at nealy age 70 to start over, and have lost the support base in their presumably only daughter, who was still there in 1810. Also, there is no older white female of the age category of HANNAH CHAPMAN PARKER listed on the 1810 census living as a member of the Brewster Household, had the widowed mother moved in with the daughter's family after the death of her husband RUEBEN PARKER if he had died between 1800-1810. But, I've not seen nor had success locating the death or burial details for the PARKER couple in Otsego Co., NY or elsewhere, but I presume that they are buried there someplace in Otsego Co.
The daughter, HANNAH PARKER BREWSTER, and husband NATHAN BREWSTER moved on to Marietta, Washington Co., OH with their growing family before 1824 (I believe it was, in fact, in 1817), in that their daughter, MARTHA BREWSTER married a POWELL HOFF, and was noted in records as being "in the home of her parents..." in Marietta in 1824. So, the BREWSTERS would have needed to have lived there for long enough for the daughter to have become acquainted with, courted and married POWELL HOFF in that year.
So, this may have helped clear up the previously known identity of the parentage of HANNAH CHAPMAN: I had previously focused on finding a CHAPMAN family which had resided in Waterford, where she was married, but had come up 'dry'. I erroneously assumed that had her family had NOT been from Wallingford, or else I would have assumed that she would likely have been married there. But it appears that she was, in fact, a "hometown" Wallingford girl born and raised in Wallingford who, for yet unknown reasons, had taken up residence in Waterbury at some point before the 1764 marriage in Waterbury to near by Wallingford born-and-raised REUBEN PARKER. This useful information pulls back the curtain and opens up a chapter on the ancestery of HANNAH CHAPMAN.
I descend down the male lines of the marriage of POWELL HOFF & MARTHA BREWSTER, via their son (one of 12 children), JOHN H. HOFF (1830 Chesterhill, OH - 1909 Dallas Co., IA) and his wife, MARY ANN AKINS (1833 St. Joseph Co., IN - 1907 Dallas Co., IA); and (one of 8 children) their son JOHN CASSIUS HOFF (1875 Dallas Co. IA - 1960 Des Moines, IA), married to MABLE MINA TENNANT (1888-1963) in 1904 in Hartley, O'Brien Co., IA;and their son(one of 3, with 2 sisters), JOHN RICHARD HOFF (1909 DSM, IA - 1970 DSM, IA) and his wife, VALETTA FLORENCE SCOTT, whom he married in DSM on 1 sep 1934; and their son (one of 2 boys), me - JOHN SCOTT HOFF (1946 DSM, IA - Now living in Chicago). So, that is my nexus with the PARKER, CHAPMAN, and BREWSTER lines back in CT in the mid- 1700s.
