As part of a National Register of Historic Places nomination, I'm seeking information on Thomas Meagher (not to be confused with the famous Civil War general of the same name) of Iowa, Kansas New York and Ireland. He, his wife and children lived in the Clinton County area from the early-to-mid 1850s up until about 1870, but I've been unable to find them on the censuses for some reason -- help! This Thomas Meagher was b in March 1815 in Tipperary County, Ireland. He apparently immigrated to the U.S. as a young man, initially living in New York City and volunteering to fight in the Mexican War in the 1840s. He reportedly served in the bodyguard of General Zachary Taylor, later to be a U.S. president. On 2 February 1852, Thomas married Bridget McCormick in NYC and the couple moved to Iowa after 1853. Bridget was b in 1824, also in County Tipperary, the dau of Patrick McCormick. The McCormicks had reportedly immigrated to New York City in 1841. Thomas and Bridget had six children in Clinton County, Iowa: Catherin (b 1853); Elizabeth (b 1854); Francis Joseph Meagher (b 1856); James (b 1858); Thomas (b 1861); and Daniel (b 1864). Just before 1870, I believe the family moved to Kansas to homestead in Montgomery County, which had just opened for white settlement after dissolution of the Osage Diminished Reserve. They staked out a claim near some natural springs about 12 miles west of Independence, Kan., initially building a log cabin, which several years later was replaced by a large, eight-room native sandstone farmhouse with Greek Revival details. Thomas d 5 March 1898 at his home. The farm and house later passed to Nora (Meagher) Lakin, a daughter of Francis Joseph Meagher. The house remained in the family until abt 1962, when it was purchased by my family. The house remains in remarkably original condition today and I'm researching it to nominate it for the National Register of Historic Places. I'm especially interested in obtaining photographs and any other information on Thomas and his family/oral history/family memories involving the farmstead. I do have more detailed genealogical information to share involving these Meaghers' 20th century descendants, too, if anyone is interested. Thanks so much!
