Hiram started off as a carpenter, married Sarah Jane Emery at her home in Hopeville, built the first house for himself and family in Murray, became a building contractor, had stock in and was the Treasurer for The Murray Publishing Company that printed the first newspaper at that location in 1872, appointed Postmaster in 1903 which position of trust he held until in 1913 he had to resign due to ill health.
