There were early Wert's out of Crawford County, OH to IL and then to IA, e.g. a Joseph Wirt/Wert. I think he was connected as a son or grandson to a David Wert b. 1800 in PA, son of a Johann Joseph Wirth/Wert 1775-1855 who moved from PA to Crawford Co., OH in 1826. I am still trying to connect lost lines. Have you looked for Wert in Wayne Co., IL? Many early Wert's and Wirt's to that state. Rae/Ray often spelled Wray early here in central PA to OH and west.
