I found an interesting thing while trying to find a matching page in the 1860 census for Butler County, Iowa. The very last page for Butler Township obviously did not originally come after the page just before in the sequencing on Ancestry.com. I found the page at the very end of the Shell Rock Township. So in the book there were a total of 97 pages in the enumeration. Shell Rock was done last. However an extra section was added by the census taker which was for people from Butler township and this is also interesting.
This is what the census taker said:
"To whom it may concern. on the 30th of last may the following persons citizens of this Township. Township of Butler in the county of Butler emigrated to Missouri expecting to make their homes there.. on their arrival there they became dissatisfied with mo and immediately returned arriving here on the 2nd day of this month. I have thought proper to enumerate them as their names appear below on this 10th Day of August 1860. The houses now occupied by them are marked 'unoccupied' in the foregoing census Jeremiah Ellis. dist. marshal"
The families included are
Elwood and Hannah Modlin and children J.W., Isaac N., Francis, Wm. C., Catharine, Margaret, Melinda, Hayden, Louisa, Catherine Bennett ( mil?)
Peter and Catharine F. Poisall and children Ella Resa, George C., (this is where the page at the end of Shell Rock Township ends and Butler begins)...(going to the last image in the Butler Township) , James, Peter, Henry S., Elizabeth, and Hannah Gallaher (mil?)
Geo. W. and Elizabeth Poisall and children Hiram, Mary J., Maria and Jane Clark (mil?)
Jeremiah and Maria Clark and children Mary, Melinda A., George R.
Andrew and Elizabeth J. Brown and children Philander and James M.
Thomas and Elizabeth Clark and children Susan, Caharine, Wm., Thomas, Jane C., Archibald, Elizabeth.
