Thomas A. Barrett was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1842 and was at the time of his death in his 60th year of life. He came to America in 1860 locating in Washington, D.C. where he resided for four years. On leaving there he was employed by a railroad company as contractor, in which work was engaged for about eighteen years, having built a number of roads in many of the eastern and southern states. Finally becoming tired of the active life of a railroad contractor, Thomas concluded to settle down to farm life and went to Storm Lake, Iowa. Being pleased with this locality he purchased the fine farm in Providence, where he resided, with the exception of about two years residence in this city some ten years ago.
He was married in June, 1869 to Miss Margaret A'Hearn Their union was blessed with ten children, three of whom, Helen, Margaret and Thomas died in infancy. Joseph, William, John, Edward, Morris, Mary and Lawrence, the youngest being eight years of age when he passed on.
I am needing to find out any information on what town he was from in County Cork. He had a sister and brother that came to America. I don't know if they traveled together as I have been unable to find a ship listing with his name on it.
I know his sister married [Mrs. M. Battell who resided in Hagerstown, Maryland] but do not know if it was here in America or from her home land. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Looking for Thomas Barrett's parents.
