I found a Swedish family who immigrated to Marion Twp in Hamilton Co., IA between 1863 and 1870 (more probably 1869-70 than earlier), as the youngest child born in Sweden is George, age 7, and the next child listed is Eda, Age 1 born in IA. The family is listed as JERN: Lewis JERN 41 Betsey 35 Annie 12 Christine 10 George 7 Eda 1 In the 1880 census, I did not find Lewis, Annie (probably married), Christine (probably married), George (?), but did find Betsy 45, Eda (listed as Ida) 12, Emma 9, Hannah 6, and Helen 3 in Boone Co., IA. Betsy is listed as widowed, and since she has a 3 year old child, it is logical to assume that Lewis died between 1876 and 1880, but would it have been in Hamilton Co., or Boone Co. I also don't know if the girls of marrying age, Annie and Christine died or got married, or if George died, got married and moved away, or if any of these events happened in Hamilton or Boone Co., IA The family's surname is also spelled FERN on the 1880 census record, but looks like it could be spelled YERN. I am also wondering if, in fact, Betsey/Betsy was a widow as stated in the census record, as I found a Lewis Ferm (same age as the Lewis above) listed in the 1880 Lucas Co., IA Lincoln Twp census, and married to Caroline Anderson, my 2nd great grandmother. This was Caroline's (Carolina) second marriage, and I am told that Lewis Ferm was not well received by the family, although there was no reason given. I am hoping that someone on this list may have access to records in Boone County, and can confirm: death, divorce, marriage or what not, regarding this family. Thank you very much.
