I have the 1914 History of Appanoose County and William H. McCabe has an entry in it, saying that he came to Appanoose County in 1856 from Saratoga, NY, along with his father (John McCabe)and mother (Eleanor Angle McCabe). William was born June 25th, 1853 in Saratoga County. The father purchased land in section 5 of Franklin Township, and that's the land William was farming in 1914.

Unfortunately there's nothing on the parents of John or Eleanor, but at least you know where they located and it is in Appanoose county.

It does say that John served in the Civil War in a Kansas Cavalry Regiment, was discharged with a disability after 18 months of service, and died shortly after his discharge, so you might try searching Civil War records.

The article does state that after his death the wife reared her family of four children, Clara (married Peter Bales), Mary (married D.W. Pettrigrew), and William. So there's one she didn't raise, either because he was old enough to be on his own, or stayed back in Saratoga.

It lists William's wife and seven children, but I'm not sure you care about them.
