My wife's great-grandmother was Cecelia Doehler. I do know that Fred (Cecelia's father) traveled between the Germany and America a couple of times before he settled. Mary's family settled mostly in San Fancisco, but were not heard from after the earth quake in early 1900s. Fred and Mary settled in Clermont Iowa (Fayette County) before moving to Village Creek in Allamakee County about 1859 or 1860. Cecelia was born in Clermont in 1859. Village Creek was a small town with two or three mills. Fred was a miller by trade and purchased a mill in Village Creek. I believe Gus worked at the mill. Gus then purchased the general store and operated this business for many years. Cecelia helped her father take care of the financial side of the business. She married William Mathis in 1882. Fred and Mary did have another child, I think Emilie. She died when she was three years old and is buried at Village Creek.
