“Pioneer Woman Dies Following Stroke Last May - Mrs. John Hyslop Enters Celestial Home After Six Months Illness -
In the death of Mrs. John Hyslop of Fulda, which occurred early Monday morning, her family lost a beloved wife and mother, her church a tireless worker and her community one of its staunchest advocates for civic and community improvement.
For the past two weeks her condition has been critical, but family and friends hoped the weakness was only temporary. A Wiser Hand, knowing her intense dislike for a life of invalidism and inactivity made it possible for her to gently sleep away and waken in her celestial home. Early in May she suffered a slight stroke, which confined her to her bed for several weeks; later she was able for some months to be about the house and even go for short drives. Light strokes which followed affected her ability to read, to write, and to crochet, all of which she loved to do. The devotion of her family and those about her helped immeasurable to pass what for her would have been days of interminable inactivity. She lapsed into a coma late Saturday afternoon and passed away at 5 a.m. on Monday.
Sadie Phelps was born at Marion, Minn., on December 27, 1861. She was educated in the schools of that community and took a four-year course at Winona Normal school to prepare herself for teaching. She taught in the schools of Olmstead and Rice counties for several years.
On March 17, 1887, she was married to John Hyslop at Chester, Minn. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Currie, where they lived for a short time. In the fall of 1880 they went to Fulda, which has been the family home continuously since that time.
Deeply loved and admired by her family for her executive ability and her abiding interest in their welfare and happiness, their devotion will be her truest monument. But she extended her sphere of influence outside the home and was among the first women to realize that women could do good in the world even outside the home. She was one of the founders of the Fulda Reading Club, which organization has throughout the years grasped the opportunity to assist in civic improvement. She was in the group which started the Fulda Public library and has worked for its maintenance and improvement through more than 35 years. She has been a zealous worker in the Presbyterian church and Sunday school, and was a member of the Aid Society and the Women’s Missionary Society. She has been honored on several occasions both by the church and Reading Club in recognition of her work in those fields. Her friends will every remember her, gracious hospitality and her charming personality in her own home which was open for so many special occasions in her years of residence here.
Mr. and Mrs. Hyslop celebrated their golden wedding on March 17, 1937, with an open house and received the best wishes and congratulations of many friends from every part of Murray County, while hundreds of messages came from more distant points.
She is survived by her husband, two sons, John, of Fulda, and Tom of Massilon, Ohio, and three daughters, Miss Genevieve Hyslop of Fulda, Mrs. P.F. Smith of Beloit, Wis., and Mrs. J.W. Thompson of St. Louis, Mo., all of whom were present at the funeral services which were conducted Wednesday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church. She is also survived by one brother, Tom Phelps, Rochester, and two sisters, Mrs. S. Hazeltine, of Los Angeles, and Mrs. George Keyes, of Cucamonga, California.” (This article came from a relative’s scrapbook in Fulda, MN. The name and date of the paper are unknown.
