Using DNA and Genetics with Family Histories

Hello Fellow Hanson, Henson, Hinson, Hynson Researchers,
The purpose of this posting is to see if there is interest in using modern genetics to help us with our family trees. For those of you not familiar with the process H_nson males would use a cotton swab to wipe the inside of the mouth to collect dead skin cells that are naturally falling off all day. The swab would be sent to a genetics laboratory where they would analyze the DNA found on the Y chromosome possessed by all, and only, males. The analysis would show similarities and differences in the sequence of the genetic code. The greater the number of similarities the more closely related one is to others who have taken the test. This is important for the tests by themselves do not tell you anything. They need to be compared to other tests before any assumptions can be made about familial relationships.
Through time, a database would grow that could be very helpful in making those family connections. This technology could even be applied to deceased family members but naturally, this would require an unpleasant or unthinkable exhumation of the belovedŐs remains.
By the way, this is the type of technology used to identify remains of soldiers who died 30-40 years ago during the Vietnam War.
If enough people are interested I would be willing to coordinate the research project.
Please let me know what you think.
Cordially,
Thomas Henson
