I am trying to solve a mystery. My grandmother has had many names. Her birth certificate lists her as Pauline, but she was also was known as Mary Ann and Marion; surnames Hyland, Beckman and by marriage Bertrand. It is rumored that she was a twin (this twin may have died at birth) born June 29, 1895 in NYC.

Her mother's name was MaryEllen(Mamie)McConnell. She was 18 when she had my grandmother. I don't know if she was married- It was never spoken of (the father left them). According to the bith certificate, his Father's name is Edward Hyland. He ws 20 when my grandmother was born. He worked as a butcher in NYC. His Parents names unknown, roots are in Scotland.

My great grandmother was often working so, my grandmother was brouht up by the Turley Family in NYC. Edward supposedly went west. My mother says he had diamond mines. Edward's brother tried to contact my grandmother on his death bed. He had something to tell her. He died before he could deliver his message.

I know this is a shot in the dark, but what does it hurt to put the story out there. Stories are handed down... I'm just curious.
