Sue,
You are only the second person in 8 years with the same family connections as me. My 3xgt. Grandmother was Mary Hyde, born at Bradshaw (now Upper Bradshaw Farm), Mellor. She was baptised on 30th November 1783, at Allostock Presbyterian Chapel, Allostock, Cheshire.
She married Thomas Saxon at Glossop Parish Church (the only one permitted to carry out marriages in the Parish of Glossop), on 27th October, 1801. She and Thomas lived throughout their lives at Bradshaw and had many children. I have some details of them all. She died on the 15th March 1857 and is buried with Thomas (who died in 1851), at Marple Bridge United Reformed Church.
I have never found out where Thomas Saxon was born or baptised. I believe his father to have been John Saxon, who first appears in the area in 1789, paying Land Taxes at nearby Harthill Farm, Rowarth, (Parish of Gt. Hamlet, Hayfield).
Mary Hyde’s father was Thomas Hyde, of Bradshaw. He was baptised on 25th December, 1747, at Mellor Parish Church. He married Sarah Moss on 22nd January, 1770, at Glossop P.C. They had a number of children:- John, born c. 1772; Thomas, bapt. 22nd June, 1772, at Allostock (of whom more later); Elizabeth, bapt. 30th Dec 1774, at Allostock, married Joseph Mason; William, bapt. 24th May, 1777, at Allostock, married Ann (Nancy) Jackson; Sarah, bapt. 30 Nov. 1781, at Allostock, married John Wood; Mary (see above); Martha, bapt. 31 January, 1787, at Allostock, married Samuel Ibbotson; and finally Hannah, bapt. 12 October, 1789, at Allostock, married Daniel Brierly.
Allostock is some 22 miles away, near to Knutsford in Cheshire. Some of these baptism journeys were made in the depths of winter. The reason for attending this church, continued by Thomas and Mary Saxon, remain a mystery.
Thomas Hyde, Mary’s older brother, is the one you refer to as having a son William, eventually forming Hyde’s Anvil Ales. Thomas married: first Hannah Sax(t)on, probably older sister to Thomas Saxon, on 2nd June, 1795, at Glossop. She died, probably in childbirth, on 5th Dec 1804, and is buried with Thomas at Marple Bridge U. R. Ch., (near to Thomas & Mary Saxon); he then married Nelly (Ellen?) Saxon on 28th February, 1806, at Glossop P.C. She produced several children: William and John, both baptised 19 Sept. 1808, at Allostock; and Ann, born c. 1827.
I will write more later today on Ralph, Thomas Hyde’s senior’s father. Hopefully you can tell me more about him.
Have you read “England in Ashton-Under-Lyne”, or “Five Thousand Acres of Old Ashton”, both by Winfred M. Bowman J.P.? They have lots of information about our Hydes (and Saxons), both of Ashton, Denton and Haughton.
Have you read “Clarendon and His Friends”, by Richard Ollard? This explains the Royal connections with the Hyde family of Hyde & Norbury.
More later.(I will also phone this afternoon), my Email address is [email protected]
