Hello Tom!
Having received your latest entry I decided to look at my meagre collection of Ordnance Survey maps, especially the West Hatch and Dinton areas. I have only one 2 1/2in. to 1 mile map of the area based on Warminster, Wilts. In the southeast corner of the map (nearest to West Hatch), is a village called Corton.East of Corton, on the very edge of the map, is a building called ‘Cortington Manor Stables’. Could this refer to the missing Cottington? It is only a few miles (say 5) due north of Fonthill Bishop. Just to the southeast of Corton is the village of Boyton, with an indication on the map of an estate or large area of parkland.
Corton is probably in the parish of Upton Lovell, with registers dating from 1611. Nearby Boyton has registers dating from 1560. Neither appear in the IGI indexes!
I also looked up Catherington on the map, it is a few miles north of Portsmouth and well inside Hampshire (Hants.). Catherington’s parish records date from 1600 and are covered by the IGI, so it might be worth looking at the IGI for Hampshire. (I have so far only copied a few of the Hyde Wiltshire IGI entries).
Back to Wiltshire I note that Dinton’s parish records commence 1558; Wylie in 1581 (covered by IGI); Fonthill Bishop in 1754; Fonthill Gifford in 1661); Chilmark in 1653.
Does the entry you quote from the Dictionary of National Biography state the names of all of Lawrence Hyde’s children? Clarendon mentions only Nicholas, Henry, Lawrence and James. Others may of course have died in infancy.
Hope to hear further.
Regards,
Eric
