Hi Tom
Thank you for the information on Nicholas’s parents, it provides a firm link between the Wiltshire Hyde family and the Hydes of Hyde and Norbury.
We are almost certainly talking about the same family of Hydes. According to my records Judith was baptised by Nicholas and Marie Hyde in Trowbridge (parish church?) on 16th June 1605. Lawrence was baptised by Nicholas at St. Peter’s, Marlborough, on 6th December 1612. Edward was baptised by Nicholas at St. Peter & St. Paul’s, Marlborough on 18th January 1617. Elizabeth was baptised by Nicholas at St. Peter & St. Paul, on 14th July 1622. Francis was baptised at the same church by Nicholas on 4th October 1624. I have only just noticed that my Wiltshire Hyde records of births and marriages only covers initial letters A to L, so I must have run out of time at the Record Office! I will return for the rest as soon as possible. Ann must have been born elsewhere, possibly London? I will check it out next week.
Nicholas (1568) was almost certainly the older brother of Henry (1570) and of Lawrence (1572), all of whom were lawyers. Henry was definitely the father of Edward, Earl of Clarendon.
There are a few pages indicating their relationships to Edward in the book – ‘Clarendon and His Friends’ by Richard Ollard, published by Hamish Hamilton in 1987.
This states that Henry’s father (un-named), a younger son, moved from Norbury, Cheshire to take service with Sir John Thynne, the builder of Longleat. He married an heiress, Mary Langford, of Trowbridge (3rd April 1597) and bought an estate at West Hatch, near Dinton, Wiltshire.
It also states that in the summer of 1628 ‘…. His (Edward’s) father gave him leave to ride the [Norfolk] circuit with his uncle the chief justice…..’ And later it mentions that Edward married his first wife, Ann Aycliffe, the desire to do so being ‘….reinforced by the death of his uncle, The Lord Chief Justice, from gaol fever caught on the summer circuit, an event which took place on August 25th 1631.’
The book also mentions the importance of Salisbury, Wiltshire, as the ‘heartland of this Hyde dynasty. Henry lived at West Hatch, Dinton. Ollard also mentions: - ‘Cottington,……owned the magnificent estate at Fonthill.’ This is only a very short distance from West Hatch. I also note that Gussage St. Michael is only a few miles away on the Blandford Forum to Salisbury Road. Several of Edward’s cousins held canonries in Salisbury Cathedral and ‘one briefly became Bishop’.
There is also reference to a Carew in the book. He was Thomas Carew, a poet, who it states died before the Civil War. In his autobiography, Clarendon writes respectfully of his ‘……many poems (especially in the amorous way) which for the sharpness of fancy and the elegancy of the language……were at least equal if not superior to any of that time.’
I believe that among my own ancestors were the Hydes of Norbury. My 3xGt. Grandmother was Mary Hyde of Bradshaw, Mellor in Derbyshire. She was the daughter of Thomas Hyde (1747-1823) and grand-daughter of Ralph Hyde (c.1700-1779). The latter probably built Bradshaw, c. 1730. Mellor is only a few miles from Norbury. Strangely enough my wife is from Trowbridge, Wiltshire and we frequently visit her family there.
I will continue to search for baptism and other records appertaining to Arthur and Ann and would be grateful for any other information you could provide.
RegardsEric
