Elizabeth,
Thank-you for your reply to me. What you sent me is extremely interesting and actually falls is line with the letters that I have. I believe what I have are the minutes of meetings held by heirs of the estate, because they are bound and the format is pretty formal. The article you sent is dated 1879 and if memory serves my letters are dated in early 1880. Your article gives many more specifics than what I have, but the generalities are the same. Also my things name the barrister the heirs hired in London to help them in their quest. His name was Judah P. Benjamin. If you know anything about the Confederacy you will recognize his name. He occupied either 2 or 3 cabinet positions in Jefferson Davis's cabinet, I believe at the end of the war he was the Secretary of the Treasury of the Confederacy. Fearing arrest for treason at the end of the war he fled to the Bahamas, then to England, where he re-established a law practice and became the Queen's Barrister- which is referrenced in my letter. I believe there are 2 of these "minutes" letters and I think another written from one cousin to another( the recipient was my gg-grandfather Oliver Compton who I believe lived in Mt Healthy, Ohio -a suburb of Cincinnati- Compton Rd is named for him I have been told.)I will try and scann these letters and e-mail them to you. The cousin to cousin letter I will have to transcribe, because as you say of yours, the handwriting is poor, andsomewhat faded. Please keep in touch. Mark
