Cleveland Alexander Hyde 7/16/1855-2/9/1933 was my great-grandfather.Based on a census we have assumed that his father was Washington J. Hyde (1833-1877).However, the family scuttlebutt has always been that Cleveland was an orphan, but noone seems to know the scoop. In the census he is not listed in line of birth with the other children, but he and his sister,Melissa, are listed at the end (they should be at the top).In the next census Cleveland and Melissa are listed next door to the rest of the family, making it seem that perhaps they were a family of their own. This was in Missouri, but Washington and his wife were both born in Tennessee. Also, Washington passed away in 1877 (it must have been the 1870 census where we got our info, maybe it was only 1860) and his wife Narcissa married an Alfred Irby and started another family. This may be how the story got lost to us.Perhaps there is a clue in all this?
