Lord Cornbury,3rd Earl of Clarendon, Governor of NY and NJ
This posting is a bit on the funny side.
Robert Hyde b 1465 had 5 children 2 of which were Hamnet b 1491 and Laurence b 1511.The American branch descended from Hamnet- 3 generations later William Hyde came to america. The noble branch descended from Laurence-who had a son Edward who had a daughter Anne. Anne Hyde's brother Henry was the 2nd Earl of Clarendon and had a son Edward who was the 3rd Earl of Clarendon. He came to America as Lord Cornbury, the appointed governor of New York and New Jersey.
Now it gets a bit amusing. He was not a nice person and was considered a moral profligate, corrupt, a degenerate and a pervert.
He spent half his time in womans clothing and opened the 1702 General Assembly of NY in a hooped gown, an elaborate headdress and carrying a fan- imitating the style of Queen Anne. He even attended his wife's funeral in a dress.
Colonist complaints caused Queen Anne to remove him from office.
I must say- I certainly had a good laugh and was extremely glad to be related to William instead of Laurence.
An old friend states that history is the poetry of time but I have discoverd that it can also be the comedy of time as well.
