GIBBS, Helen Hyde -- Age 95, passed peacefully June 23, 2001 in Oakland. Daughter of Professor Charles Gilman and Margherita Isola Hyde, Helen graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California and also studied at Oxford, Cambridge and the Sorbonne. She taught English, French and History in local schools before working many years as administrative assistant to the U.C. Extension Registrar. She was a published mystery novelist under the name Helen Farrar and enjoyed reading, drawing, knitting and playing the piano. She was predeceased by her husband of many years, John Dickens Gibbs, and sister, Margherita Hyde Dunn. Survivors include her sister Katharine Hyde Williams of Tiburon; niece Jane Dunn Turner of Arkansas; and cousins Steven J. and Mary S. Ward of Richmond and Judy Ward Freeman of North Carolina plus numerous grand-nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 2, at First Congregational Church, 2345 Channing Way, Berkeley, conducted by Rev. Patricia deJong.
