MRS. HYDE, WIFE OF PRESIDENT OF IRELAND, DIES
DUBLIN, Ireland, Dec. 31.--Mrs. Lucy Kurtz Hyde, wife of President Douglas Hyde of Ireland, died at 4 o'clock this afternoon in the president's country home, Ratra house, French Park, County Roscommon. The Hydes had been spending the Christmas holidays in Roscommon, native country of the president, who is 79 years old.
Mrs. Hyde has been in poor health, and since her husband's appointment in April as first president of Ireland under the new constitution she has been unable ro appear at presidential functions.
The president's wife was of German extraction but was reared in England. Her mother came from the West Indies and her father was an Austrian. She met Hyde while holidaying in Dublin in 1893. In that year Hyde, who is a noted Gaelic scholar and author, founded the Gaelic league which was responsible for revival of the Irish language.
