MORRISON
My maternal Gt Gnd Mother was ELIZA EMMA HYDE MORRISONBn 15 Dec 1841, at 14 Morton Street Newington Causeway Surrey, the daughter of
CHARLES HYDE MORRISON & EMMA GLASGOW
By the 1840’s they were living in Newington Surrey, where my Maternal Gt Gnd Mother Eliza Emma Hyde Morrison was born 15 December 1841 at 14 Morton Street. she was not baptised until 16th February 1847, at St Dunstan’s Stepney, on the face of it she appears to be an only child, but there was a rumour that she had 2 sisters who emigrated to Canada.
Have failed to find the family in the 1851 Census, have a death cert dated 1st Jan 1841 for Emma Hyde Morrison aged 7months daughter of Charles Hyde Morrison Gardener of 7 Swan Court, Swan Street Newington, have found a Charles, & Emma Morrison in the 1841 at Swan Row, but they do not use "Hyde" and the ages are wrong, and the first child is to old. ! .
Eliza Emma married William Francis Fosh 25 December 1862 at the parish Church of West Hackney. (copy cert held) He came from a long line of Protestant Hugenough Weavers, but following his marriage he became a Catholic.
As a member of The East of London F H S(No;2494) I’v been able to join a small but active group researching the name FOSH and its many variants, throught this group I’v been able to trace my FOSH roots back to 1723. The Fosh’s of Fouache as they were originally known were French Huguenot Silk Weavers who settled in SpitaFields. and Bethnal Green East London England in the mid 1700’s.
You can visit a Fosh web site to-day at

I believe that my maternal 4x gt gnd father was RICHARD CALEB MORRISON who married aSARAH HYDE alias SWITZER on 02 Jan 1783 at St James’s R C Church Reading Berks. England. .He died age 80 at The Bourne Winchmore Hill 24 Mar 1840.
Questions; What was a London lad doing in Reading, and ifSarah’s alias suggests a previous marriage, why did she need her parents consent, was it because Richard was a non Catholic. ?
Their son Caleb Hyde Morrisona Carpenter was born abt’ 1789 died age 53 at Edmonton Middlesex 1841 married a Sarah Redding at Hackney 1809.Sarah died age 62 on the 03 Oct 1850 at Hope House Southgate Middlesex.Born abt 1788.
There is an earlier reference to Hyde, when CHARLES HYDE SWITZER married SARAH SMITH at St Mary’s Reading Berks on the 02 Aug 1763.
In the 1841 Census at Edmonton there is a Sarah age 70, born abt 1771 with ElizabethMorrison age 8, and also a Thomas and Sarah Davis with Robert Morrison aged 8 and Leslie Morrison, aged 7.In the I G I Robert and Leslie appear to be the children of Robert & Harriet Morrison, and were baptised St Faith’s under St Paul’s London.
Lancashire
Sophia Morrison 19, Agnes 17, and Margaret McCone 25,were in the 1861 censusas unmarried Flax Spinners born Ireland.Lodging with Henry Pollitt at 11 Valancainnes, Mill Street Salford.Ref; RG09/2904/24/45In 1851 Sophia was living with her parents Richard James Morrison & Sarah May Paul in Reading Berks age12. Meanwhile their brother William Hyde Morrison was living in Everton age 39 an Apprentice Cotton Broker.
Seek to know what broke up the family in Reading, and why they came to Lancashire.?
