Although there is no record of Mary Hide Cotton's birth, her birthyear can be calculated within a fairly narrow range. Richard Hide II, her first husband, has to have been born 1656+/-1. Richard Hide III, her son, has to have been born 1676+/-2. This means Mary Hide Cotton would have been likely to have been born 1659+/-4. I don't know enough about the Colliers or Sowersbys to comment on how well the chronology fits. There is also a possibility that Mary Hide Cotten was originally a Basnett. If Mary Sowersby, the wife of John Collier, left any traceable female line descendant, however, and a female line descendant of Mary Hide Cotten could be found, a mitochondrial DNA test could, in certain cases, resolve the issue decisively. In any case, the argument for her being a collier is certainly better than for her being a Rogers.
