Hello,
I have a 'theory', unproven at this point, that Mary Hide Cotten may have been a COLLIER.
John Collier JRwas the ward of Richard Hide after his father's decease. In 1678 Thomas Sowerby petitioned the Orphans Court that the “guift he received for Jno. Collier son of Jno. Collier deced. may be and remaine in the possession of Rich. Hide who hath the said Orpt”. (“Surry County, Virginia Court Records, 1672-Jan 1682, Book III” by Weynette Parks Haun).
His father, John Collier SR, who died before 1677 in Surry Co, was married to Mary SOWERBY, dau of Thomas Sowerby, and they had a daughter named Mary who has not been traced. Other children of John Collier Sr and Mary (who married 2nd John RAWLINGS) were Thomas and Joseph (my line).
1710 - February -
"The Last Will & Testamt. of Richd. Hide
deced. proved by ye. oaths of John Tyus
& Edward Scarborough & a Probate thereof
granted to Mary Hide Executx. thereof.
John Tyus, Edward Scarborough,
Joseph Collier & Gregory Rawlings
or any three of them being first sworn
before one of her Majties. Justices of the
Peace for this County are nominated &
appointed to value & appraise the
Estate of Richd. Hide deced: And ordered
that Mary Hide Executx. of the Last Will
& Testamt. of the said deced. present an
Inventry. & the said Appraismt. at the
next Court." (per "Surry County, Virginia
Court Records, 1701-1711, Book VI" by
Weynette Parks Haun)
If you should run across any information that might confirm this theory, or disprove it, please let me know.
